Obviously, you will need a camera. I've found the best photos come from older digital cameras.
This isn't something to really overthink. If you have an older camera? Go ahead and use that. All you have is your phone? That also works.
If it can take a picture, it'll work. That's all you really need.
I normally go out at night or sunset for photos. Really anytime when it's dark. But there are some specific times I try to aim for.
For sunset, when the colors are aren't exactly the normal orange/yellow-ish type of thing. Blues, purples, those combined with yellows/oranges
(Water tower censored due to the town name lol) As you can see here, the evening colors look especially nice.
I've yet to really get good photos at this time, but in theory it could be really good.
Another perfect time is that little moment when the sun has mostly set and there's still a tiny bit of lit-up cloud left. You know what I mean.
This and when the sun is beginning to rise with the tiny bit of light coming are perfect times. Hell it can even fall under the defintion of liminal
I call these specific times Voidtime. Most of my best photos have been taken during or around Voidtime.
Personally I go out into my town and go to places I know wont be very populated later at night. Stores, gas stations, parks, parking garages.
What you're looking for is transitional spaces. It sounds more complicated than it is.
In short, a transitional space is just a space that is intended to take you somewhere. A hallway, for example, is meant to take you to other rooms.
A gas station is meant to be somewhere you stop when going somewhere, like on a road trip. You don't (normally) go to a gas station to be in one.
If it isn't transitional, it's not liminal by definition.
Though some spaces do give you that same feeling a liminal space would. Also take pictures of these. They're just as cool and should also be shared.
Liminal space photography isn't super complicated once you know what you're looking for. Just go out sometime and see what you can find.
